Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) said a state grant for a local non-profit organization is expected to be approved when the state Bond Commission meets Friday, January 25.
The Children's Center of Hamden is set to receive a grant of $87,025 for a new power generator. Located at 1400 Whitney Avenue, the Children's Center is Connecticut's oldest private child caring agency serving on average 170 children and their families each day.
"This funding will enhance the ability of the Children's Center to continue their important mission of helping children in need," Speaker Sharkey said. "The Children's Center not only provides services to youth and families from Hamden, but also helps many others throughout the region.
The skilled staff of child care workers, therapists and teachers provide an environment designed to create positive experiences for children and youth with behavioral, emotional and learning disabilities.
"I thank Governor Malloy and the rest of the Bond Commission for their commitment to the well-being of children and families throughout Hamden," said State Rep. Michael D'Agostino (D-Hamden). "This funding allows the critical work at The Children's Center to continue to help more families in need."
The grant will be administered through the state Department of Children and Families. A total of 15 such grants are expected to be awarded Friday for various non-profit organizations throughout the state, contributing to the creation or retention of 31 construction-related jobs.
