REP. DILLON PROPOSES CAP ON PROPERTY TAXES
Families could not be charged more than 5% of income

Representative Patricia Dillon (D-New Haven) has proposed legislation for the 2008 session that would provide immediate property tax relief. Rep. Dillon’s proposal would cap property taxes at 5% of a family’s total income.

“The property tax burden is crushing families,” Rep. Dillon said. “This cap would yield real instant relief and put money in the pockets of property taxpayers.”

Language for the proposal is currently being drafted by the Legislative Commissioner’s Office.

Rep. Dillon said, “This proposal will be ready to move forward when the gavel falls for the first time in February. The governor and legislature must make property tax reform a top priority in 2008. We must face this crisis and ease the burden on families.”

Representative Dillon was first elected to the General Assembly in 1984. She is an Assistant Majority Leader and serves on the Appropriations, Higher Education and Judiciary committees.
