COMMON GROUND STUDENT WINS CAPITOL ESSAY CONTEST

Rep. Pat Dillon (D-New Haven) was proud to introduce the Young Women’s Leadership Program essay contest winner, James Beech, during Women’s Day at the State Capitol. Mr. Beech, a student at New Haven’s Common Ground High School and a Westville resident, is the first male student to win the annual contest.

Mr. Beech’s essay, “Role Models Wanted” posited that young women are disadvantaged by the scarcity of positive female role-models in literature and film.

“Literature and film have too few female characters,” Beech wrote. “Since the world population is evenly divided between male and female, our stories should reflect this ratio.”
