DILLON’S DIRT BIKE BILL CLEARS THE HOUSE

Representative Pat Dillon hailed House passage of legislation (HB 6638) to stiffen penalties on illegal dirt bike and ATV riders in New Haven.

Under current state law, municipalities can impound dirt bikes and ATV's. However, the law caps towing and storage fees at $250 per vehicle (CGS ยง 7-148). The legislation increases the fine to a maximum of $1000 for the first offense. Fines increase up to $3000 for subsequent offenses.

“The status quo was not an option,” Rep. Dillon said. “A $250 fine has not curbed the number of illegal dirt bikes plaguing our city neighborhoods.”

Rep. Dillon originally submitted legislation on illegal dirt bikes in November 2012 after hearing from numerous city residents about the dangerous stunts pulled by illegal motorcycle riders.

The legislation now awaits action by the state Senate.
