REP. PAT DILLON CHEERS FUNDING FOR SHUBERT

The state Bond Commission just approved funding for improvements to the Shubert Theater. This great news as the theater approaches its centennial is a win for the arts, economic development and New Haven's taxpayers.

Shubert

I want to thank Governor Malloy for recognizing the importance of the Shubert in New Haven's arts landscape, economy and in the history of theater.

The $4 million commitment from the state actually exceeds my original $3 million request for bond funds. City Hall augmented my original request by developing a plan to phase-out the city's financial responsibilities for the Shubert. Currently the city provides approximately $250,000 in subsidies in addition to other obligations."

The Shubert Theater opened on December 11, 1914. Known as the Birthplace of the Nation's Greatest Hits, the theater launched Al Jolson, Marlon Brando, many of Richard Rogers' shows including South Pacific, Carousel, The King and I and The Sound of Music.

The Shubert is a key driver of economic activity and the arts in the heart of New Haven and our region. The state's investment will pay dividends on numerous fronts.
