DILLON'S DIRT BIKE LAW LEADS TO TOUGHER PENALTIES
FOR NEW HAVEN SCOFFLAWS

Representative Pat Dillon hailed action by the New Haven Board of Aldermen to codify a new state law to increase the penalties on illegal dirt bike riders.

"This is an example of teamwork, Rep. Dillon said. "I authored the bill after a Board of Aldermen hearing, New Haven delegation members in the legislature cosponsored it, and now the Board of Aldermen has adopted a city ordinance enabled by the state law. "Teamwork and cooperation between the local and state levels to crack down on illegal dirt bike riders can make our streets safer."

The state law (HB 6638) increased the fines on illegal riders from a maximum of $250 to a maximum of $1000 for the first offense. Fines increase to a maximum of $1500 then $2000 for subsequent offenses. The Board of Aldermen Monday voted unanimously to increase fines to the new levels supported by state law.

Rep. Dillon said, "We needed a law with teeth, a law with realistic penalties to protect public safety."
