Rep. Henry Genga

March 16, 2009

To the Editor:

What would East Hartford be like if it didn't have its own newspaper?

I'm afraid to imagine. For longer than I can remember, the town's residents, businesses and organizations had come to rely on the East Hartford Gazette for true local news that serves all, advertising at reasonable rates and community oriented announcements.

But the town came close to losing its unique voice of the community recently when its owner decided to stop publishing the weekly newspaper. Refusing to allow the local institution to die, Editor Bill Doak tried to buy the paper, but was rebuffed by the owner. Undeterred, Doak dipped into his own modest assets, made new business arrangements, mobilized the staff and continued publishing the newspaper under its new name, The Gazette.

Yes, the voice of East Hartford now continues to live, but it is hanging on by only a thread. The staff, including Doak, is working without pay to get the new enterprise off the ground and ensure our freedom of the press here in East Hartford.

Without the continued vital support of all -- residents, businesses and organizations – the Gazette will not survive. That is why I urge everyone to show your support. If you have an item to sell, take out a classified advertisement. If you're a business owner, advertise in the Gazette. And if you're a resident, show your support by patronizing the local businesses.

There is no publication that can serve the community as well as The Gazette. No newspaper other than the Gazette that can provide a true view of the community. The Gazette is not only an independent voice for freedom but also a voice for everyone who lives or does business in town. You will be serving yourself well by supporting The Gazette.
