ENERGY FORUM HOSTED BY GENGA HELPS RESIDENTS FIND SAVINGS

Officials representing state agencies, utilities and businesses fielded dozens of questions from residents seeking ways to save on their energy and utility bills during a forum hosted by state Rep. Henry Genga (D-East Hartford) in East Hartford Town Hall.

State Rep. Henry Genga and state Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz hear
East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc talk about the need for cutting energy costs.

The featured speakers included state Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz and representatives from Connecticut Light & Power Co., Connecticut Natural Gas Co., the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority.

“With utility costs constantly going up and posing a serious problem for consumers, we have to constantly look for ways to reduce our energy costs,” Genga said. “This forum, I believe, helped people gain a better understanding and knowledge about how they can reduce their utility bills.”

Katz said that increased competition among third-party suppliers of electricity is causing some companies to resort to high-pressure telemarketing tactics, door-to-door soliciting and volatile, variable electric rates. Katz told consumers to be vigilant and cautious. She urged them to avoid variable rates.

Other state officials talked about programs for switching home-heating systems to less costly natural gas during the March 6 forum.

Genga said that anyone who was unable to attend the forum and is interested in obtaining pamphlets and other materials for conserving energy and lower utility bills should call his office for help. Genga’s office number is 860-240-8583.

“The utility savings are a gift that keeps on giving,” Genga said.
