WINDHAM RECEIVES $180,821 IN CT ROAD REPAIR FUNDS

By Jordan Acker, Campus Correspondent

State Rep. Susan Johnson recently announced the town is expecting money from the state to make improvements on roads.

Windham will be receiving $180,821 from the state in Town Aid Road (TAR) funds within the next four weeks.

“The town will use the money primarily to strip and pave roads, install storm drainage and clean catch basins,” said Windham town engineer Joe Gardner.

TAR funds are received every year from the state to help maintain town roads before they get worse and more costly to repair. They are typically released in January in hopes of fixing major problems before spring.

Governor Jodi Rell approved the bonds Tuesday at the State Bond Commission meeting. “It's unfortunate it's so late, but we're fortunate the governor approved the bonds,” Johnson said.

Lauren Poudin, a 6th-semester communications major, said she drives on these roads often. “After this winter, fixing any pot holes or frost heaves would make driving much easier,” said Poudin. “Obviously any driver would appreciate better roads.”

Along with better roads comes lower local property taxes and more people going to work, according to Johnson. “I am committed to fighting for state investment in job creation,” said Johnson. “These funds will make our communities and state stronger.”
