The Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance recognized State Representative Susan Johnson as a "Children's Champion" during a ceremony held at the State Capitol. Johnson received the recognition for showing a strong commitment to early childhood issues in both Windham and at the legislature.

“The Early Childhood Alliance does wonderful work, and I'm honored to receive this award,” said Johnson, who sponsored legislation this year that helps children impacted by the recession. “We are the first state in the nation to have passed legislation requiring state agencies to change how they respond to families and kids during economic hard times. Now more children will receive the help they deserve when times are tough.”

The Act Concerning Children in the Recession (HB 5360) creates a recession leadership team of state officials who would implement and coordinate the state's response when Connecticut's unemployment rate reaches 8 percent.

“Rep. Johnson has been a great champion for children in Connecticut and we want to honor her accomplishments,” said Ann Pratt, Executive Director of the CT Early Childhood Alliance.

The Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance is a group of organizations and individuals committed to improving developmental outcomes in the areas of learning, health, safety and economic security for children ages birth to eight. Member organizations provide care and education for nearly 20,000 children. The Alliance's goal is for all children born in Connecticut to enter kindergarten healthy, eager to learn, and ready for school success.

Representative Susan Johnson is serving her first term representing the 49th Assembly District in Windham. She serves on the Education, Energy & Technology, and Finance Revenue & Bonding Committees.
