NEW WINDHAM SENIOR CENTER WINS STATE SUPPORT
Senior Center to be Part of Ongoing Main Street Revitalization

Windham’s new senior citizen/community center is one step closer to becoming a reality, according to Representative Susan Johnson (D-Windham) and Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr., (D-Brooklyn) who announced that funding for the project has been approved by the State Bond Commission at the December meeting.

“I am very pleased that the new Windham senior and community center project will move forward. It will be a great asset here in town," said Rep. Johnson.” I would like to thank Senator Williams for his commitment and hard work over the past 4 years. I also want to commend Peter Debiasi of ACCESS Agency for his efforts in coordinating this project and also thank Governor Malloy for his support to secure the necessary funding."

The ACCESS Agency in partnership with the Town of Windham will develop a multi-purpose community center that will provide food distribution related to senior nutrition and other programs, opportunities for education and social interactions, as well as the achievement of economic viability of those seeking to enter the workforce or improve their job readiness through job training and a special partnership with greater Windham’s Commercial Licensed Cooperation Kitchen.

“This is great news for the seniors of the Windham area--they will have the centrally located facility they deserve,” said Senator Williams. “This is also good news for downtown Willimantic and the ongoing revitalization of Main Street and I would like to thank Governor Malloy for his support.”

The project will develop, relocate and expand in size, programs and services, and number and type of clients served.

“We are delighted that Governor Malloy, Senator Williams and Representative Johnson and the State Bond Commission chose to support this project,” said Peter DeBiasiPresident and CEO of the Access Community Action Agency. “It will be a tremendous asset for the community – especially Windham’s senior citizens. The Access Agency is happy to be a part of building this important resource for the community.”
