CHILD ADVOCACY GROUP GIVES AWARD TO ROJAS FOR 2013 LEADERSHIP

Connecticut Voices For Children has presented its 2013 Legislative Award to Rep. Jason Rojas for his commitment to supporting children's access to equitable, quality educational opportunity.

In giving the award, Ellen Shemitz, the New Haven-based organization's executive director, said Rojas used his leadership to advocate on behalf of early literacy programs and to promote improvement in educational quality.

"Representative Rojas has helped to ensure the passage of laws intended to improve educational outcomes, support marginalized students and improve family safety in the context of domestic violence," Shemitz said.

Rojas, who is serving his third two-year term, is the House chairman of the legislature's Planning and Development Committee. He is also a member of the Education and Finance, Revenue and Bonding committees.

"Jason has proposed and continues to work for the passage of bold legislative initiatives addressing access to affordable housing, attention to racial and socio-economic diversity in school choice, and educational support for children in state care," Shemitz said.

Connecticut Voices for Children (www.ctvoices.org) is a research-based policy think tank that works to advance public policies that benefit the state's children, youth and families.
