MONTVILLE RECEIVES STATE GRANT FOR SCHOOL SECURITY
Rep. Ryan Welcomes the Improvements

Deputy Speaker of the House Kevin Ryan welcomed the announcement by Governor Malloy of state funding for security improvements in the Montville school district. The competitive grant program for school security is part of the Gun Violence Prevention and Children's Safety Act passed during this year's legislative session. Montville will receive $5,047 in state funds to be matched by $2,390 in town funds.

"This funding will not only make our schools more secure, but will give us the peace of mind that we are doing everything we can to live up to our obligation to provide a safe learning environment for our children," said Rep. Ryan. "Public safety is one of the top priorities of government."

The funds may be used for costs associated with security infrastructure improvements made in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Improvements include security windows, bullet-proof glass, new school entrances and radios. A school security assessment survey was conducted by each local school district that applied which resulted in funding during this first round.

The award will be administered by the Department of Emergency Services (DESPP) and Public Protection in consultation with the Department of Education (SDE) and the Department of Construction Services (DCS). The state grant to Montville is part of a larger award of $5 million to 169 schools in 36 districts across the state.

Rep. Ryan is in his 11th term serving the 139th House District in Bozrah, Montville and Norwich.
