ADVOCATES, LEGISLATORS EXCITED TO CELEBRATE
FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL ANGELMAN DAY

State Representative Kevin Ryan (D-Bozrah, Montville, Norwich) and State Senator Andrea Stillman (D-20) are excited to join constituent advocates in celebrating the first-ever International Angelman Day on Saturday, February 15, 2014. The day will help raise awareness for Angelman syndrome both locally and across the world.

“Becoming aware of AS is the first step toward correct diagnosis and treatment,” said Rep. Ryan. “I applaud my constituent Ellen Desjardins for her advocacy.”

“This is a necessary day, and a time to raise awareness of a syndrome that is all too often misdiagnosed," said Sen. Stillman. "It's an opportunity to educate the public, and offer support to those who spend their lives providing constant care to loved ones with AS.”

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neuro-genetic disorder that occurs in one in 15,000 live births. AS is often misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy or autism. Characteristics of the disorder include developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders. Individuals with Angelman syndrome will require life-long care.
