REP. BUTLER AT GROUNDBREAKING
FOR NEW WARNER GARDENS HOUSING

State Representative Larry B. Butler (D-Waterbury) recently participated in the official ground breaking for the new Warner Gardensmodern affordable housing complex. After yearsof neglect, Omni Development Corporation obtained state and private financing for the first $14.3 million phase, which includes the reconstruction of 58 one-, two-and three-bedroom flats in 17 buildings.

“As House Chairman of the Housing Committee, the pleasure I get from seeing the rebirth of this complex right here in my city is immeasurable.I'm so glad to add my support to help make this project a reality,” said Rep. Butler.“I thank Governor Malloy for his continued commitment to Waterbury in the way of $70 million to build 749 new affordable housing units.”

The state Department of Housing has invested $5.2 million in Warner Gardens. Connecticut Housing Finance Authority has awarded low-income housing tax credit proceeds of $12.6 million to the project.

“Under Governor Malloy's administration, the state is building affordable housing at an unprecedented level,”said State Housing Commissioner Evonne M. Klein. “Since 2011, together with the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, we have invested almost $1 billion across the state to develop affordable units. Warner Gardens is an excellent example of the type of high quality housing we aim to create in Connecticut. This project will add a renewed sense of vibrancy to the Long Hill neighborhood and will have a lasting, positive impact on the residents who live there for years to come. I'm proud of all the partners on the local and state level who came together to make the new Warner Gardens a reality.”

“The redevelopment of Warner Gardens highlights the importance of tax credits in funding for affordable housing and their power to transform neighborhoods. The financing for Warner includes $12.6 million in proceeds from 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and $294,000 from the State Housing Tax CreditContributions (HTCC) program,”said Karl Kilduff, executive director of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.
