GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE AWARDED MILLIONS IN STATE FUNDING
Members of the New Haven Delegation, which includes State Rep. Juan Candelaria (D-95), State Rep. Toni Walker (D-93) and State Rep. Robert Megna (D-97), announced today that Gateway Community College will receive millions from the state for its move to Church Street and its consolidation of the Long Wharf and New Haven Campuses. The funding was approved at today’s State Bond Commission meeting.
"Gateway Community College is a tremendous asset to our Greater New Haven Community, not to mention to the State of Connecticut. Gateway is, as many colleges are, in a state of perpetual growth. To compete as a college and to meet the demands of our young people, it is important that Gateway has the funding it needs to continue to develop. Today’s decision shows that the Bond Commission understands the importance of an investment in the future of Gateway Community College, and I am very pleased with its decision," Rep. Candelaria said.
"I am very pleased with today’s decision. Gateway will be a landmark college and an important part of the urban development happening in New Haven. Gateway’s move will also benefit the downtown community children who are trying to advance their education," said State Rep. Tony Walker.
Gateway Community College received the following funding out of today’s Bond Commission meeting:
$15,173,943: To consolidate both the Long Wharf and North Haven campuses into a single location at a city-owned site on Church Street in New Haven. The project consists of construction of a 358,000 square foot community college on a 3.2-acre parcel, which formerly contained department stores. The city of New Haven will be reimbursed for the cost of demolition of the remaining building on the site.
$5,000,000: To cover the City of New Haven for the State’s share of the development of infrastructure, parking and an urban park as part of the downtown Gateway, which also involves the relocation of Gateway Community College and Long Wharf Theater to the southeast corner of downtown.
