STATE REP. BOB GODFREY SELECTED
TO LEAD COUNCIL OF STATE GOVERNMENTS

Danbury legislator named chairman of national organization

State Representative Bob Godfrey, who represents the City of Danbury in the Connecticut General Assembly, has been selected to serve as the 2011 chairman of the Council of State Governments (CSG), a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of state officials in all three branches of government in all 50 states, Canadian provinces, and U.S. territories. Its slogan is “sharing capitol ideas,” and its mission is to provide a place where officials can meet and do exactly that, he said.

The appointment came this weekend during a national conference of the organization held in Providence, Rhode Island. Godfrey was voted to the year-long position by the organization’s governing board, a national panel of state officials serving all three branches of government.

“The Council of State Governments is one of the top resources for law and policy makers from around the country. We can use them when we’re crafting laws, policies and regulations that are fiscally sound and produce the best results, often because another state has already tried it out,” Godfrey said. “Through thorough, comprehensive, nonpartisan research, CSG provides states and member jurisdictions with concise information.”

In this prominent role, Godfrey will help shape the direction of the organization along with Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who has been selected to serve as CSG 2011 President. Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell served as president of the organization in 2008.

Godfrey remarked, “Having access to CSG puts Connecticut in the forefront of advocacy among the states. I particularly look forward to working with Governor-elect Malloy, his incoming administration and my colleagues as Connecticut upgrades its relations with our federal government. We’ll have a greater voice and be more competitive nationally.”

During Godfrey’s term as chair, he will host the Growth & Prosperity Summit in Connecticut on March 26-30, 2011.

Currently serving his 11th term as state representative of the Connecticut General Assembly’s 110th district, Godfrey holds the position of deputy speaker and is a member of the Judiciary Committee, the Planning and Development Committee, and the Legislative Management Committee. He has served in a number of influential roles with CSG, having previously held the position of vice chair in 2009 and co-chair of the Eastern Regional Conference in 2005.

CSG is the only organization serving all three branches of state government in the United States. It is a region-based forum that fosters the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy. The organization offers unparalleled regional, national and international opportunities to network, develop leaders, collaborate and create problem-solving partnerships.
