TAX FREE WEEK: GODFREY GOES SHOPPING, TOO

State Representative Bob Godfrey went shopping at the Danbury Fair Mall on Tuesday. He was delighted to see a crowded parking lot, many shoppers, and many sales tied to Connecticut’s Sales Tax Free Week, which runs through Saturday August 25th.

Rep. Godfrey was an original introducer of the bill that became Connecticut’s law, with his friend, former State Senator David Cappiello (R-Danbury). He also successfully fought attempts to repeal it in 2011.

“So many families are coming off of school summer vacations and are able to stretch their dollars a little further,” Godfrey said. “But the savings cover many other purchases, even those for the coming Christmas shopping season. I bought a few items myself.”

Tax free purchases are expected to save consumers as much as $7.5 million statewide, especially on back-to-school shopping. On average, it is estimated that families will spend nearly $700 on back to school purchases this year.

The 6.35% tax free exemption applies mainly to clothing and shoes and is intended to coincide with parents' seasonal back-to-school shopping needs.

This year, Connecticut's sales tax holiday is scheduled for August 19-25, 2012. During Connecticut's tax free week, the following items will not be subject to state sales tax:

Items that remain taxable include sports equipment, specialty clothing, jewelry and accessories.
