MANSFIELD TO BE SERVED BY TWO HOUSE DISTRICTS
Chaplin and southwest corner of Mansfield redistricted out of 54th
State Representative Gregory Haddad (D-Mansfield, Chaplin) said that after the 2012 elections Mansfield will have two members of the House of Representatives serving the town.
The change, which also includes moving Chaplin out of the current 54th Assembly District served by Haddad, is a result of constitutionally mandated legislative redistricting based on population changes reported by the national 2010 Census.
The purpose of redistricting is to establish and maintain voting districts that are faithful to the principle of one-person, one-vote. The General Assembly’s nine-member bipartisan Reapportionment Commission voted on the new district boundaries this afternoon. Haddad is not a member of the Commission and thus did not get to vote on the final plan.
“I've been honored to represent all of the citizens of Mansfield and Chaplin and will continue to do so for the rest of my term,” said Haddad, noting that the current 54th District grew into the most populated House District in the state over the past decade. “Everyone in Mansfield will benefit from having increased representation in the House.”
The new districts will first be used for the 2012 state elections next November. Representation under the new districts in the General Assembly will officially begin when legislators are sworn into office in January, 2013.
Rep. Haddad is currently serving his first term in the legislature and is vice-chair of the General Assembly’s Commerce Committee and also a member of the Appropriations and Higher Education committees.
