The $464,000 Bridgeport grant is one of 14 grants announced by Governor Dannel P. Malloy; more than $3.5 million in state funding is being awarded to 14 towns and cities across Connecticut that will expand the availability of high-quality preschool to 416 new children.
There is strong evidence showing that young children who participate in high-quality pre-k programs enter school more ready to learn than their peers. Studies show that students who attended a pre-k program scored higher on reading and math tests than children receiving parental care.
Students who attended a child care center or other preschool program also showed gains, although former pre-k students exhibited the greatest achievement. Several state studies have also documented significant cognitive gains for children who receive pre-k.
The Bridgeport delegation applaud Governor Malloy's keeping our city on the radar and supporting this request to bring 60 new Pre-K slots in Smart Start funding.
