NEW BRITAIN YWCA TO BE RENOVATED WITH HELP OF STATE FUNDS

Hartford - The New Britain state legislative delegation is pleased to announce that the State Bond Commission has approved $500,000 today for the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) on Glen Street in New Britain.

The funds will assist with renovations and improvements to its facility including the relocation of the entrance, the creation of a bus drop off area and renovations to create expanded program space.

“This organization has been providing indispensable programs and services for the empowerment of women for many decades,” Rep. Robert Sanchez (D-New Britain) said. “These funds are well spent and we will get the same positive returns the YWCA has been delivering since its inception.”

“Providing opportunities and assistance for children and their families is an ongoing challenge that the YWCA continues to meet,” said Rep. Betty Boukus (D-New Britain, Plainville, Bristol), who serves as the legislature’s bonding subcommittee chairwoman. “This investment in our community sends a very positive message.”

"I applaud Governor Malloy's decision to fund this important project," said Rep. Tim O'Brien (D-New Britain, Newington).  "The funding will go a long way in helping children and families in greater New Britain."

Formed in 1858, the YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world with more than 25 million members in 106 countries, including 2.6 million members and participants in 300 local associations in the United States. The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
