NEW BRITAIN LEGISLATORS ANNOUNCE MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

State Reps. Rick Lopes (D-New Britain, Newington), Bobby Sanchez (D-New Britain), Peter Tercyak (D-New Britain), Betty Boukus (D-Plainville, New Britain) and Sen. Terry Gerratana (D-New Britain) announced the passage of the state conveyance bill which will allow the city of New Britain to obtain the property on the border of New Britain and Newington that will be used to build a new Costco.

“Costco represents major economic development in our city with the combination of the increase in the grand list and the creation of over 220 jobs,” Rep. Lopes said. “This is the culmination of many hours of discussion and compromise and I am pleased to see it coming to fruition. I especially thank Mayor Woods and the Newington Town Council for their help and cooperation in moving this important economic driver forward.”

“This is a solid investment in jobs,” Rep. Boukus said. “I want to thank my colleagues in the House and Senate for their hard work on this issue.”

“I have been a strong supporter of Costco’s intent to invest in our city,” Rep. Sanchez said. “This project will bring much needed jobs and I look forward to welcoming them. Not only is Costco a reputable and excellent company, but their investment is a boost to our local economy, and adds to the city coffers.”

“Costco is well known for their fair labor practices. They pay far more than minimum wage and give their workers good benefits. Costco is a good fit for New Britain. I’m happy we could help,” Rep. Tercyak said.

“The passage of this bill marks the conclusion of many hours of work that went into this project to bring Costco to New Britain,” said Senator Gerratana. “The addition of this business to our city will create hundreds of new jobs for local residents, attract consumers from the surrounding area, and stimulate new economic growth in New Britain in conjunction with CTFastrak."

The measure is part of a larger conveyance bill that involves two towns and several state departments along with environmental impact considerations. The Costco project is expected to generate over $500 thousand a year in property taxes for the city of New Britain.

Costco Wholesale is a multi-billion dollar global retailer with warehouse club operations in eight countries. Costco touts its family-friendly policy and a work environment free from all forms of unlawful employment discrimination. In a Consumer Reports survey, 26,000 shoppers evaluated their experiences at 10 major retailers and Costco was the top-rated store in the survey.
