State Representative Bobby Sanchez, Vice Chair of the legislature’s Education Committee, announced today that the New Britain Legislative Delegation signed a letter expressing concern over an ongoing dispute between New Britain’s Mayor and the Board of Education.
The letter (attached) highlights the delegation’s efforts to secure state education funding each year for New Britain.
Questions about a $4.4 million education grant accounting entry, which was awarded by the state, surfaced with the potential risk of having harmful budget implications. The city may be in violation of the state’s minimum education budget requirement if, as the result of the accounting entry, the budget is rolled back as outlined by the Mayor’s office.
“Our primary collective concern over this situation is the potential impact on future education funding for New Britain,” Rep. Sanchez said. “We have worked very hard with the governor to make sure that our education funding is not only maintained, but increased even during the tough economic climate that we have seen. We can’t afford to lose what we have already gained.”
